CAREER DESTINATION
Become a Data Analyst
A junior data analyst usually needs to turn a messy question into a defensible answer. Show how you cleaned data, checked assumptions and explained a decision.
Try this now: Take a small public dataset and write the question, method and limitation.

What does a junior data analyst actually do?
A data analyst helps turn available information into a useful explanation or decision. In entry-level work this may include checking spreadsheet records, cleaning data, writing database queries, building reports, comparing metrics and communicating limitations. Responsibilities vary: some "analyst" jobs emphasize reporting, some business operations and some deeper statistical work.
What should you learn first?
| Foundation | Why it matters | A practical way to demonstrate it |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheets | Inspect, organize and summarize tabular information | Clean a sample data table and document assumptions |
| SQL | Retrieve and aggregate structured data | Show queries for joins, filtering and grouping |
| Analytical reasoning | Explain what a number means and what it does not | Identify a misleading comparison in a chart |
| Communication | Make findings understandable to a decision-maker | Write a one-page summary with an honest limitation |
| Visualization | Display relationships and changes clearly | Choose an appropriate chart and describe the message |
Python, BI tools and statistics can matter for particular openings. They should not be treated as universal requirements unless the vacancies you target actually request them.
How can a fresher show readiness without work experience?
Build one small analysis project with data you can legally use. Explain the question, origin of the data, cleaning steps, approach, conclusion and limitations. If you use synthetic data, say so. A well-defended small project may provide a stronger interview discussion than a long list of tools you cannot demonstrate.
Example: Using a fictional college event registration dataset, identify duplicates, calculate attendance by session, visualize changes and note why registrations are not the same as attendance. This is a practice example, not a claim about actual student behavior.
How might hiring work?
A process can include application review, recruiter screening, a spreadsheet or SQL exercise, analytical questions, and a hiring-manager conversation. Some employers use different steps or none of these. Read their actual notices, practise explaining your work and check whether the role requires a particular degree or graduation batch.
What commonly needs attention?
Listing tools without work examples; interpreting correlation as causation; hiding data-quality problems; presenting classmates' contributions as your own; and preparing advanced topics while neglecting the tasks in the target vacancy.
A real task is more than a dashboard
The Government of India's National Qualification Register describes data-handling, spreadsheet analysis and visualization modules in a data-analysis qualification. A course description is not a live employer requirement, but it helps reveal the kinds of work behind the title. In a job, the important question is usually what decision can be made from this data, and what cannot be inferred?
Work through a small, defensible example
Illustrative project: A college society has a synthetic event-registration table with person_id, session, registered_at and attended. First, check whether one person appears more than once for the same session. Next, calculate registrations and attended people by session. Then create a simple chart and write two sentences: “Session A had more recorded attendance than Session B in this practice dataset. These records do not explain why, and registration is not attendance.” Keep the raw data, cleaning notes and query or spreadsheet formulas so another person can reproduce your result.
| What you can show | What a reviewer can ask |
|---|---|
| A query with a join and grouping | Why did you choose that join; did you double-count people? |
| A cleaned spreadsheet | Which rows changed, and why? |
| A chart with a caption | What decision does it support, and what limitation remains? |
| A one-page explanation | Could a non-technical colleague understand your conclusion? |
Choose preparation from actual openings
If a vacancy emphasizes spreadsheet reporting, practise formulas and quality checks before chasing every programming library. If it asks for SQL joins and you cannot explain them, build that capability. If you can do the work but your resume only lists tool names, improve the project description and link to a permitted sample. Check degree, location and experience requirements first; a strong portfolio does not override a mandatory eligibility rule.
